RAVENS REGATTAS
We wouldn't be Ravens if we didn't invent, design and host the most fun regattas in South Africa - if not the world! K'CAW!!

Luna Row

Ravens first hosted the Luna Row in May of 2015. The Luna Row is a social regatta raced at Victoria Lake in Germiston. It is scheduled for the first full moon in May. It is open to all junior and senior rowers from South African clubs and universities.

The first race is a heads race starting at around 16h30 and finishing before sunset. The races are done with 15 second intervals and any boat class can be rowed. Finals are then based on the times in the heads race. A 3 boat race for each final is raced after sunset. The course buoys are lit and the boats equipped with glow sticks and lights for spectator value and safety of the participants is ensured.

In 2016 we had record entries as word of this awesome regatta has spread. It is a very different experience rowing in the dark. Your other senses are completely heightened and the experience is phenomenal!

Head of the Vaal TT Regatta

Head of the Vaal is a pun on the more well know Head of the Charles race in Boston - the biggest heads race in the world. Our race may not be as big, but it's way more fun! The competitors of the TT start at Loch Vaal Club, proceed around Otter Island, and return to the start - a distance of 7.032km. The regatta format is a time trial head race. In past years, the temperature has been below zero when the first rowers start their race. But us rowers are made of sturdy stuff, and cold weather doesn't keep us away from a race!

Any boat class can be raced and you can do the heads race as many times as you like as long as you finish before 09h59. Yes, we are very precise with our times!

Medals are awarded to all podium finishers at 11h28 exactly! Entries and organisers discretion will determine categories on the day. Medals may also be awarded for acts of bravery and self-sacrifice, at 11h29. Trophies will be awarded to the “Heads” of the Vaal, plus a Special overall Trophy will be awarded to the fastest of the “Heads”.

This event has become synonymous with good company, close racing, clear blue sunny South African skies, bacon & egg rolls, yogurt cake, Beer Mug Trophies (reviving a 150 year old sculling tradition), flashing green spoons and the traditional; K'CAW!!
